New Ireland, Papua New Guinea - June 6, 2024: On January 14, 1944, a SBD Dauntless dive bomber piloted by 1st Lt. Billy Ray Ramsey was hit by anti-aircraft fire while on a mission to Rabaul. The gunner, Sgt Charlie J. Sciara, bailed out, and 1st Lt. Ramsey went down with the plane. In January 2024, locals on the west central coast of New Ireland found the crash site, including the remains of Lt. Ramsey.
