The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (known locally as Artsakh) is a predominately Armenian enclave that broke away from Azerbaijan in the early 1990s in a war that killed around 30,000 and displaced more than 1 million people. It is separate from Armenia but deeply integrated culturally, economically, and politically. The international community continues to recognize Nagorno Karabakh as part of Azerbaijan. The border with Azerbaijan is one of the most militarized borders in the world, along with Kashmir’s Line of Control and North Korea.
The population of Nagorno-Karabakh is approximately 150,000. The population of Armenia is approximately 3 million.
