Transnistria, with a predominately Russian-speaking population situated on a narrow strip of land between the Dniester River and the Ukrainian border, has its own government, currency, and military, but its independence is not recognized by the international community. It broke away from Moldova in the early 1990s and has requested to join the Russian Federation, but Russia has rejected the request. Internationally, it is still recognized as belonging to Moldova.
