A young girl enjoys a late afternoon boat cruise on the Dniester River near the Transnistrian city of Tiraspol. Transnistria was formed after the dissolution of the USSR, when in 1992 tensions between Moldova and the Transnistrian territory escalated into a military conflict. A ceasefire several months later ended hostilities but did not resolve the political conflict. Today Transnistria is an unrecognized but de facto independent republic.
