One of the many kind, courageous, and suffering people I've met over the past several weeks in Ukraine is Angelina. When I was in Lviv in early March we met a couple times, and we met again today for a couple hours to wander around the train station to look for portraits and, with her translation help, stories.

Angelina's parents and younger sister have been trapped in a town occupied by the Russian military since the early days of the war. Leaving would be risky, so for now they stay.

It's a long separation for Angelina, a long and unknown wait. The stuff of bad dreams. There's a lot of darkness when a country is at war.

Maybe it's because of this darkness that I suggested we stop for a while in this shaft of light. That's probably not true, of course, but it's definitely true that in looking at this picture now, hours after taking it, I see something of her story -- her waiting, her courage, her head held high.

And I see too how, even though most of the picture is dark, the eye is drawn to that which reflects the light.
