A memorial plaque in Aitape, Papua New Guinea. The plaque is in honor of Sgt. Leonard G. Siffleet, an Australian soldier beheaded by the Japanese at Aitape Beach on October 24, 1943. The photograph of Siffleet's execution — the only known photograph of an Allied POW being executed by the Japanese — was discovered on the body of a dead Japanese major near Hollandia by American troops in April 1944.
