On his third birthday, in the Western Wall Plaza in Jerusalem, Hilel's father gives him his first haircut. The haircutting ceremony is called an upsherin in Yiddish, and a chalakah by Sephardic Jews. The child’s peyot (side-locks) are left intact—the initiation into his first mitzvah. (May 21, 2023)
