At the crash site of "Marge", a P-38 Lightning assigned to Richard Bong, "993", the last three digits of the U.S. Army Air Force serial number, is stenciled on a wingtip.

On March 24, 1944, piloted that day by 2nd Lt. Thomas E. Malone, the plane experienced mechanical issues and crashed in the mountains on the Rai Coast of Papua New Guinea.
