On the Keram River in the village of Yar, a woman sits in the front of a dugout canoe, having just finished washing the child. When I asked a man why the boat was named Struggle, he said something like: “Have you ever made a canoe out of a tree?”

Yar is located in East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea.
